Mary Kay Smith Graduation 2023

Earlier this week, President Baxter shared the sad news of the passing of Mary Kay Smith. Alongside her husband, Louis, Mary Kay was among the most influential benefactors in LaGrange College's history, helping create opportunities that have transformed the lives of students, faculty, and staff. She was instrumental in establishing need-based scholarships and funding endowments that support the College's Travel Abroad Program and Faculty and Staff Professional Development Program. In addition to supporting scholarships and programs, the Smiths helped fund the College's recent brand initiative, reflecting their belief in a strong future for LaGrange College and the importance of sharing its story with generations to come. Together, Mary Kay and Louis have demonstrated an extraordinary belief in the mission of LaGrange College and the transformative impact of education.

Dr. Baxter described Mary Kay as "a lifelong learner," a spirit she shared with students through her support of experiences that encouraged exploration and growth. Those who knew her remember her as courageous, curious, and deeply inquisitive, with a genuine interest in the lives and aspirations of young people. A devoted Christian and lover of travel, she believed in the power of education to broaden perspectives, strengthen character, and prepare students for meaningful lives of purpose and service.

Awarded an honorary doctorate in 2023, Mary Kay had a special appreciation for the Undergraduate Research Program. During her final campus visit this spring, she spent time with students at the research symposium, enjoyed meeting those whose lives had been impacted by the Smiths' generosity, attended the Senior Art Show, and joined the campus community for a Sound of Success celebration honoring graduating seniors.

Today, the impact of Mary Kay's generosity can be seen across campus and in the lives of the many students she helped support. Her generosity and commitment have strengthened the College in ways that will be felt for decades to come. She believed deeply in the promise of every student and took great joy in watching them pursue their aspirations.

Mary Kay and Louis Smith are pictured with President Rufus W. Smith, who served LaGrange College from 1885 to 1915. A descendant of the former president, Louis is his great-great-grandson.

Mary Kay's legacy extends far beyond the scholarships and programs she helped make possible. She was a cherished friend of the College. We are profoundly grateful for the countless ways she enriched the LaGrange College community, and we extend our deepest sympathies to Louis and the entire Smith family.

In memory of Mary Kay Smith, the flags across campus will be lowered to half-staff this week.
